What Is the Pool/Spa Shell & What Are Its Forming Methods?
- The pool/spa shell is the foundation of your aquatic oasis, providing the structural integrity and shape of your pool or spa. This shell is typically constructed using a sprayed concrete method, either gunite or shotcrete, which involves applying a mixture of cement, sand, and water over a framework of reinforcing steel (rebar). This process allows for flexibility in design, enabling the creation of various shapes and sizes, from modern rectangular pools to classic freeform designs. In a new pool build, the forming methods used to shape the shell determine the final look of your pool. Whether you envision a sleek geometric design for your pool in Irvine or a flowing freeform shape for your spa in Laguna Beach, Sanctuary Design & Build can bring your vision to life. Explore the various pool and spa shell designs we offer and create a backyard retreat that perfectly complements your Orange County lifestyle.

Process - Shotcrete/Gunite & Rebar Application
At Sanctuary Design & Build, a leading design-build firm in Orange County, we create durable and structurally sound pool shells with expert pool forming services, encompassing rebar installation and shotcrete/gunite application for both new pool construction and existing pool demolition and rebuilding. This guide outlines the key phases of our pool forming process. Unless otherwise stated in your contract, all installations pertaining to pool forming are performed in the exact outlined method! From precise excavation (or demolition) and rebar placement to expert shotcrete/gunite application and curing, we ensure a strong and long-lasting pool shell for your Orange County home. Our unique Sanctuary Sequence, a comprehensive site assessment and planning process, sets the stage for successful pool projects throughout Orange County, including cities like Huntington Beach, Anaheim, and Mission Viejo.

Phase 1: Site Preparation (Excavation or Demolition) and Rebar Installation for Pools in Orange County
This crucial first phase focuses on preparing the site, either through excavation for new pool construction or demolition of an existing pool, and then installing the reinforcing steel (rebar) to create the structural framework for your new or rebuilt pool in Orange County. As part of our Sanctuary Sequence, the pool design and engineering have already been finalized in our Sanctuary Studio. This essential preparation for pool construction or renovation includes:
-
Excavation (New Pools): For new pool construction, we excavate the pool area according to the engineered plans, ensuring proper dimensions and depth.
-
Demolition (Existing Pools): For pool remodels involving demolition, we carefully demolish and remove the existing pool shell and any surrounding structures as needed. This includes proper disposal of debris.
-
Rebar Placement: We install the rebar according to the engineered specifications, creating a reinforcing cage that provides strength and stability to the pool shell. This includes tying the rebar together with wire to create a continuous grid. This step is the same whether it is a new pool or a pool being rebuilt.
-
Inspection: We conduct a thorough inspection of the rebar installation to ensure it meets engineering standards and is ready for the plumbing and shotcrete/gunite application.

Phase 2: Installing Underground Plumbing for New Pool Construction in Orange County
This phase focuses on installing all necessary plumbing lines within the prepared pool area, ensuring proper connections for filtration, circulation, and other pool features. This step occurs after the rebar is in place and before the shotcrete/gunite is applied. This is the same process for both new pool construction and pool rebuilds. For more details on this process, please refer to our pool plumbing section via the link below. A plumbing inspection may also be required at this stage before the shotcrete/gunite is applied.

Phase 3: Shotcrete/Gunite Application for New or Rebuilt Pool Shells in Orange County
This phase involves applying the shotcrete or gunite to create the pool shell, forming the final shape and structure of your new or rebuilt pool in Orange County. This crucial step includes:
-
Shotcrete/Gunite Application: We apply the shotcrete or gunite using specialized equipment, ensuring even coverage and the desired thickness.
-
Initial Curing: We begin the initial curing process immediately after the shotcrete/gunite application.
-
Shotcrete/Gunite Inspection: After the shotcrete/gunite has been applied, an inspection is usually performed to verify the shell's thickness and structural integrity.

Phase 4: Extended Curing, Detailed Inspection, and Preparation for Subsequent Phases for Orange County Pools
This final phase is crucial for ensuring the long-term structural integrity of your new or rebuilt pool in Orange County. It focuses on the extended curing process, a detailed inspection, and preparation for the next construction phases. This thorough process includes:
-
Extended Curing: We continue the curing process for the recommended time, typically 28 days for optimal strength. This involves regularly watering the shell to maintain proper moisture levels and prevent cracking. The duration of curing can vary depending on weather conditions.
-
Detailed Inspection: After the curing period, we conduct a detailed inspection of the cured shell. This inspection includes checking for any cracks, voids, or other imperfections. We also verify the dimensions and shape of the shell to ensure they match the engineered plans.
-
Preparation for Subsequent Phases: We prepare the shell for the next phases of pool construction, such as waterproofing, tile installation, and coping installation. This may involve cleaning the shell surface or making minor adjustments as needed.
